Today we had the pleasure of again sailing with Chris (aka Navy Diver), Scott, Steven, Doug and DP. This is the guys’ 6th trip with us and it was another great one. We fished a full day and had most of our fish in the morning, on the flood and with eels. We did a little bottom fishing during slack on the south side and then back over for a little more bass fishing in the early hours of the ebb. We boxed what we needed and were back at the dock by 2:30 pm with three fish weighing in at 35+ pounds.

We were scheduled to sail with Erik Klingenberg and his 11-year old daughter this morning. This would have been their first trip with us. Although it was likely fishable, I didn't think it would be an ideal day and given that we wanted to ensure that his daughter enjoyed the experience, we agreed to reschedule their trip. A disappointing morning for all, but hopefully we’ll be able to make up for it later this year.

Today we sailed with Bucky, Johnny, Jerry, Pete and Dom. This is the guys’ fifth trip with us and for the first time ever, they arrived on time and we were off the dock at 6:00 am exactly. Nice job, gentlemen! Given the iffy forecast, we initially thought we’d start with the wire since we thought it may be too sloppy to drift. However, I decided to try our luck and we ran straight to the Elbow. We had eels in within a half hour of leaving the dock and although it definitely wasn’t flat, we were able to drift through the slop to land some nice-looking bass. The bite was early and within a couple of hours, it had pretty much shut down. We headed east to fish as much of the end of the ebb as we could before it slacked off completely. The bluefish, as usual, were in abundance. We boxed a few of them and then decided to run back in to the Elbow as the flood got started. We were in luck as we landed a few more bass. It wasn’t as productive as the morning, but it was enough to get the guys their share of fish for the day. Another great trip with this group, although I must say, the less-than-pleasant conditions kept the guys a bit quieter than in years past. Don’t think as many Budweisers were consumed this time around…and I know a couple of the guys were quite relieved at 3:00 pm when we arrived back to the dock. Looking forward to seeing them again next September!

The NOVEMBER RAIN had the absolute pleasure of again fishing with the Krupnick clan. Dad Matt, and his triplets Noah, Julie and Emily, spent the day bass fishing with us today. This is the fifth year that the group is fishing with us and at 14-years old, the kids pretty much now run the show. Matt and Noah were out with us a few weeks ago, along with Noah’s buddy Blake, but the weather and fishing weren’t great, so this weekend’s trip was quite refreshing! We left the dock at 6 am with eels and headed straight to the Elbow. The bluefish, as usual, were relentless and we fed plenty of bait to them. However, we held out and fought through them and landed eight very nice bass, with the largest around 35lbs. We released one more at the boat before we decided to head to Cartwright to do a little fluke and bottom fishing. We were able to add a few more fish to our box of bass and were back at the dock by mid-afternoon, just in time for a late lunch with mom, Polly (who I swear we are eventually going to convince to come out with us). This was another fantastic trip with the Krupnicks.

With the kids starting school this week, I’m not sure we’ll be able to get them out again in 2012. But, if not, we look forward to seeing them next summer!

The bass bite has been really good and the fall bass fishing is just getting started in Montauk. There were some really nice fish all around Westlake Marina this weekend. I urge anyone who has a love for fishing to book a trip now!

Today we attempted a morning trip with Tom, Mike, Sharon and 7-yr old Sophie and 4-yr old Nicholas. We started with a little bottom fishing near outer Shagwong and had some porgies and sea bass, which kept the kids busy. It was pretty sloppy and although we weren’t able to drift bait as we had hoped for the second half of the trip, we dropped the parachutes in around the North Rip for a couple of passes. Unfortunately, it was only about 15 minutes before the group decided to end the trip. Just a little too nasty for the kiddies. Hoping we’ll get them out again before the season is over!
