In the evening, we headed right back out with Kevin Wishe & company. Again, a repeat group, the guys were ready to do what we always do...catch big bass. We fished the same spot as we did during the day, near the PR, and had fish weighing in at 30+ lbs all night. The guys didn't want all 12 fish, so we released a few after getting them to the boat. Great trip, as usual, and tons of laughs! Oddly, our first fish of the night was actually a very nice-looking sea bass. I can't recall the last time I hooked a sea bass on an eel, but it seemed to work this time!

Today we fished with Matt Krupnick and triplets Emily, Julie & Noah. These guys have been fishing with us for years and it is so awesome to watch the kids grow. This year, aside from no longer needing life jackets (which was a thrill for them!), each was able to fight their own fish with no help from anyone else. We fished around the Pollack Rip all day with the eels and had only a few bluefish mixed in. But the bass were huge and we were easily able to catch what we needed.

For our night trip, we again had the pleasure of fishing with brothers Paul and Steve Roukis, and their children Evan, Helena and Morgan. We left the dock at around 5:30 p.m. in search of bass. Fishing was a bit of challenge tonight, with lots of bluefish and short bass, but the guys worked hard and we were fortunately able to send them home with dinner for their Sunday BBQ. Always a great time with this group!

August 13, 2011 (Day)

During the day today, we fished a two-boat trip for Jeff's bachelor party. We steamed east about 20 miles in search of a whippy or mako. We started the morning with a sea turtle which swam by the boat, although he seemed to quickly hurry away (as quickly as turtles can hurry, I suppose!) as soon as we hooked into our first blue shark. Kudos to our bachelor who had his first shark boatside for a release within 20 minutes. We had great water and lots of bait, but had only a few fish after that first one. Kind of a slow day. At the end of the day, just as Steve and I were taking the lines in, we hooked a mako which I'd guess was about 125 lbs or so. Never even got much of a fight, however. The fish started truckin back towards the boat and by the time I had reeled in all of the slack, he had already tangled with the last line that was still in the water. He gave us a show with a nice leap out of the water about 20 feet from the boat, but as soon as I set the hook, we busted him off. The entire ordeal lasted no more than 15 seconds. We rigged a quick bait and tossed it in (cleverly thinking that we could entice him again), but he was long gone by then. Lucky fish...guess he'll live to swim another day.

The boat sailed with Capt. John Lowe at the helm today as Steve and I were unable to make this trip. We had a full day bass/fluke combo trip with Jimmy Li and Pablo. He started at the North Rip with chutes and they landed a few nice-looking bass in the morning. The group then spent the afternoon at Frisbies where they had consistent action with plenty of nice flatties. Nice going, Cappy!
